CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) SAFER AT HOME DIRECTIVE RESULTS IN CLOSURE OF ALL NON-ESSENTIAL BUSINESSES IN MEMPHIS

WINDYKE UPDATE

MARCH 24, 2020

Dear Windyke Members,

Jim Strickland, the mayor of Memphis, has issued a “safer at home” directive to all citizens of Memphis, https://covid19.memphistn.gov/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Executive-Order-No-03-2020.pdf.  His order also orders the closure of all non-essential businesses in Memphis.  We are in Memphis and on the mayor’s order website, https://covid19.memphistn.gov/listing-of-essential-and-nonessential-services-3-23/, golf courses and private clubs are specifically mentioned as non-essential.  We understand the unprecedented serious nature of these circumstances.  At the same time, we have contacted both the Mayor’s and the Chief Operating Officer’s offices asking for reconsideration only for our open-air areas.  We believe the golf courses and practice areas provide open-air spaces that easily lend themselves to the suggested six foot minimum social distancing.  Utilizing this space gives our members a safe option to get out, exercise and enjoy themselves when everything around them is so difficult.  So far, we have not received a variance; therefore, we will close most business operations of the club.

The gate will remain open from 9 am – 5 pm.  We will be offering food and beverage for takeout only.  The snack bar door will be open.  Take out may be ordered at the snack bar counter.  You can also visit the Windyke website to see the general menu on the opening page.  Special offerings will be sent through frequent emails and also on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.  To place an order, please call the clubhouse: 901-754-1844 or email our clubhouse staff at: events@windyke.com.

The locker rooms and pro shop west door will remain open for access to staff assistance regarding your personal belongings (golf bags and merchandise) stored here.  If you need your golf clubs or golf supplies, call the pro shop: 901-755-3160, or email our golf staff at: proshop@windyke.com.

The business and management offices will remain open to process receivables, payables, payroll and communicate with our members, employees, vendors and city government.  If you need to contact our staff, call Greg Hynes:  o) 306-2001; c) 493-4506 or email to: greghynes@windyke.com.

Our maintenance area will remain open so we can continue to monitor and maintain our golf courses.  Weather permitting, we will begin work on drainage improvement of the driving range and continue the renovation of the left bunker on #8 East Course.

All other areas of the club will be closed.

Since the opening of Windyke in 1962, we have only closed our courses on very rare occasions: Christmas Day each year, four days for Hurricane Elvis and fifteen half days for tournaments.   Our record shows our commitment to be here for you.  Now, serious circumstances are forcing us to close until April 7th or further notice.  You may notice that some other facilities in the area are open through this directive.  Those facilities are not located in the city of Memphis.  The mayors of those municipalities have given a different directive for golf courses.

It is difficult to express how sad this is for the owners and employees of Windyke.  We have worked diligently since 2001 to overcome severe obstacles hindering the golf industry.   During that period, we lost approximately 35% of our members and rounds.  At the same time, we continually maintained and improved the facilities and courses.  We were willing to do this because we want Windyke to be exceptional in quality and value.  We were able to do this because you have supplied the means and consistently supported our endeavor.  For that, we are forever grateful.  Our hope is for this period to end shortly.   With your help, we will continue to make Windyke better for you to enjoy when we reopen.  Please stay safe and thank you for being great members.

Sincerely,

Russ Garner
